Movement & Fitness: Building Activity That Lasts
You don't need to train like an athlete to feel the benefits. Here's how to build movement into your week in a way that actually sticks.
Movement is the part everyone pictures first when they think about getting healthy — but the goal isn't to punish yourself with brutal sessions you dread. It's to move regularly, in ways you can keep up. Consistency beats intensity, every single time.
Regular activity is linked to better heart health, mood, sleep and energy, and a lower risk of many long-term conditions — and you don't need huge amounts to feel it. Doing something most days matters far more than going all-out occasionally.
What actually counts as movement
It's not just the gym. Walking, cycling, gardening, playing with the kids, taking the stairs — it all adds up. A good week includes a mix of three things:
- Something that raises your heart rate — a brisk walk, a run, a bike ride
- Something that builds strength — which protects your joints, bones and independence as you get older
- Simply moving more day to day — less sitting, more pottering about
How to build it so it lasts
- Start small and regular. A 20-minute walk most days beats one heroic session you'll dread.
- Pick things you enjoy. You'll keep doing what you actually like.
- Add strength twice a week. It pays off more as you age than almost anything else.
- Break up long sits. A few minutes of movement every hour or so makes a difference.
- Make it easy to start. The lower the barrier, the more you'll do.
Try this week: add one short walk a day — even 10 to 15 minutes. Notice what it does for your mood and energy.
If you're just starting out
If you're new to exercise, coming back after a break or injury, or managing a health condition, build up gradually and get some guidance rather than going in too hard. That's exactly what coaching is for — meeting you where you are and keeping you safe getting there.
